Possibly from Proto-Indo-European *bʰrews- (“belly, to swell”); compare with English breast, Proto-Germanic *brunjǭ (“breastplate”), and Proto-Slavic *břȗxo (“belly”). However, also compare Ancient Greek βρύω (brúō, “to be full, bursting”) and Sanskrit भ्रूण (bhrūṇa, “embryo”).
