From Proto-Indo-European *(s)ḱh₂embos (“crooked”), probably from the same substrate source as *kh₂em- (“to arch”). Compare Ancient Greek σκαμβός (skambós, “crooked”) and Proto-Germanic *skimpijaną (“to skip, hop, dance; to joke”), *skumpōną.
