Proto-Celtic · reconstructed language

*slattā

noun

Meaning

  1. staff, stalk

Etymology / origin

Possibly loaned from a substrate language of northwestern Europe, hinted by the geminate and a-vocalism. This substrate could also have been the source of Proto-Germanic *laþô (“plank, board”), but with loss of initial *s-. Perhaps related to the root of *sladyeti (“to slay, hit”) (compare Proto-Germanic *slahaną); similar sense development can be found in Serbo-Croatian šibati (“to flog, whip”) > šiba (“rod, switch”).

  1. šibati(Serbo-Croatian)
  2. *slahaną(gem-pro)
  3. *laþô(gem-pro)
  4. -(qfa-sub)
  5. slattā (Proto-Celtic)
  6. Relations: der, cog, cog, cog
