Adullamite

Meaning

1. A member of the anti-reform faction of the British Liberal Party in the 19th century.
2. An inhabitant of Adullam. Near this town there was a cave where David and his allies sought refuge from Saul.

Etymology / origin

From Adullam + -ite, in the political sense from a speech by John Bright in Parliament on 13 March 1866 deriding the anti-reformist faction of Edward Horsman as a “Cave of Adullam”, i.e. a group of malcontents.
