1. Those areas of the world, mostly in Southeast Asia and the Pacific but also including Madagascar, that are inhabited by speakers of Austronesian languages.

Etymology / origin

Back-formation from Austronesian (from Latin austro- (“southern”) + Ancient Greek νῆσος (nêsos, “island”) + -ia).
