Meaning

1. A member of a fictional, primitive race of teddy-bear-like creatures.

Etymology / origin

Coined by American filmmaker George Lucas in 1983 from the syllabic reverse of Wookiee. The name first appeared in the end titles of the film Star Wars Episode VI: Return of the Jedi.
