- A medieval Mongol and later Turkicized khanate established in the 13th century and originating as the northwestern sector of the Mongol Empire; at its maximum extent covering large parts of modern Russia as well as modern Ukraine.
Etymology / origin
A reference to the gold-hung palace-tent (orda) of the Great Khan, whence all power was derived.
