Etymology / origin

From Ojibwe ᒪᓂᑐᐸᐦ or Cree ᒪᓂᑐᐘᐳᐤ (manitowapow, “spirit strait”), referring to the Narrows of Lake Manitoba. Compare English manitou, Ojibwe manidoo.
