Borrowed from French N'Djaména, from the Arabic name of a nearby village نِجَامِينَا (nijāmīnā, “place of rest”). Renamed from Fort-Lamy on 6 April 1973 by President François Tombalbaye, as part of his authenticité program of Africanization.
