Sophene

Meaning

1. Province of ancient Armenia and of the Roman Empire, located to the south-west of Greater Armenia. Independent kingdom from 3rd century B.C. until 90's B.C. Lies in modern-day southeastern Turkey.

Etymology / origin

Via Latin Sōphēnē, from Ancient Greek Σωφηνή (Sōphēnḗ), probably of Urartian origin. Compare the Armenian name: Ծոփք (Copʻkʻ).
