Meaning
- An Iron Age kingdom flourishing 9th-6th century BC, located in the Armenian Highland and centred in the mountainous region around Lake Van.
Etymology / origin
A modern (19th century) rendition of Learned borrowing from Akkadian 𒆳𒌵 (Urarṭu). Corresponds to Biblical Hebrew אֲרָרָט (ʾărɔrɔṭ) (see Ararat). See also Old Armenian Վան (Van) for the self-designation of Urartians.
