First attested in the Hunmong jahoe (訓蒙字會 / 훈몽자회), 1527, as Middle Korean 놋 (Yale: nwos). Glossed hanja 羅 with eum reading 라. Probably relative to Modern Korean 노 with semantic shift from cord to cloth.
