* According to Çağbayır, of onomatopoeic origin, compare Bashkir балҡ (balq, “expression used to denote a bright shine”). * According to Tietze, from Arabic برق (barq, “lightning”) + *-ï-, compare dialectal Turkish barkımak (“to shine”) and balk (“lightning”), alternative form of berk.
