Proto-Uralic · reconstructed language

*sewe-

verb

Meaning

  1. to eat

Etymology / origin

Koivulehto (2006) suggests borrowing from early Proto-Iranian *dzyewH- (later *ǰyawH-), from Proto-Indo-European *ǵyewh₁-, though this has chronological problems: the sound change *e > *a is usually dated as already common Indo-Iranian, and this theory is now usually disregarded.

  1. *ǵyewh₁-(ine-pro)
  2. sewe- (Proto-Uralic)
  3. Relations: cog
